Social Awareness and Responsible Decision Making of Students in Grade 4 and 5 in Vietnam
Abstract
Awareness about other people (social awareness) and responsible decision-making are the basic elements of SEL (Social and emotional learning). The reality of social awareness and responsible decision making of students in grade 4 and 5 and the correlation between these two elements have not been considerably studied in Vietnam. This study identifies the reality of the two and the relationship between them. The survey on 1004 students in grade 4 and 5 by questionnaires and situations illustrates the fact that the mean of the ability to be aware of other people is 2.25- the average in the scaling point and that of the ability to make responsible decisions is 2.42, which is above the average in the scaling point. There is a difference in the ability of social awareness and responsible decision making in terms of grade-4-and-5 studentsā gender and residential areas. There is a strong and close correlation between the two abilities. The clearer students are aware of other people, the more responsible the decisions are.
